roject Development for Louisa May Alcott: The Woman Who Wrote Little Women has been undertaken by Nancy Porter Productions, Inc., in association with Filmmakers Collaborative*, an association of Massachusetts documentary film and video makers. Filmmakers Collaborative was founded to provide mutual support for independent filmmakers in the Greater Boston area, and fiscal sponsorship for their work.
Pre-Production for Louisa May Alcott: The Real Woman Who Wrote Little Women was supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities with a Planning Grant of $30,000 and a Scripting Grant of $60,000. All NEH funds have been awarded through the White House "We the People" initiative "to encourage and strengthen the teaching, study, and understanding of American history and culture." An additional $15,000 for development came in 2004 from the National Endowment for the Arts; subsequently a matching grant of $15,000 was awarded by PBS. In July, 2005, a $600,000 production grant was awarded by the NEH. The budget was brought to a level sufficient to begin production through a co-production commitment from American Masters, and through grants, from The Simons Foundation and Audrey Simons, and from The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations. Additional funding is being sought for educational outreach and other aspects of the project.
Contributions to the Louisa May Alcott Project can be made through Filmmakers Collaborative and are tax-deductible.
